  • question_answer
For\[A\xrightarrow{{}}B,\,\,\Delta H=4\,\,Cal\,\,mo{{l}^{-1}}\],\[\Delta S=10\,\,Cal\,\,mo{{l}^{-1}}{{K}^{-1}}\]reaction is spontaneous when temperature can be:

    A) \[400K\]

    B) \[300K\]

    C) \[500K\]

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

For\[A\xrightarrow{{}}B\]. This reaction is spontaneous, so \[\Delta G\]should be negative but for temperature \[400K\]and\[300K\], \[\Delta G\] value would not be negative and hence will not be spontaneous.                 \[A\xrightarrow{{}}B\] \[\Delta H=4\,\,kcal\,\,mo{{l}^{-1}}=4000\,\,cal\,\,mo{{l}^{-1}}\] \[\Delta S=10\,\,cal\,\,mo{{l}^{-1}}{{K}^{-1}}\] \[\Delta G=\Delta H-T\Delta S=400-500\times 10\]        \[=4000-5000=-1000\] for\[500K\], \[\Delta G\] will be negative and hence it will be spontaneous process.
