     If the points (1,2),\[(-1,x)\] and (2, 3) are collinear, then area of the triangle made by these points is zero. i.e.,    \[\left| \begin{matrix}    1 & 2 & 1  \\    -1 & x & 1  \\    2 & 3 & 1  \\ \end{matrix} \right|=0\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[1(x-3)-2(-1-2)+1(-3-2x)=0\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x-3+6-3-2x=0\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[-x=0\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[x=0\]
