RAJASTHAN PET Rajasthan PET Solved Paper-2010

  • question_answer
If the quantum numbers for the 5th electron in carbon atoms are\[2,1,1,+1/2,\]then for the 6th electron, these values would be

    A)  \[2,1,0,-\frac{1}{2}\]

    B)  \[2,0,1,+\frac{1}{2}\]

    C)  \[2,1,1,-\frac{1}{2}\]

    D)  \[2,1,-1,+\frac{1}{2}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The atomic number of carbon is 6 and its electronic configuration is \[1{{s}^{2}},2{{s}^{2}},2{{p}^{2}}\]. Thus, 5th electron enters in\[2{{p}_{x}}\]and hence, 6th will go to\[2{{p}_{y}}\]with spin in the same direction.
