    In an examination there are three papers and a candidate has to get 35% of the total to pass. In first paper he got 62 out of 150 and in second 35 out of 150. How much he must get out of 180 in the third paper to pass?

    Solution :

    Suppose he must get out x marks out of 180 in the third paper to pass. Then,    \[\frac{35}{100}\times (150+150+180)\]                                    \[=62+35+x\] \[\frac{35}{100}\times 480=97+x\] \[97+x=168\] \[x=168-97\] \[=71\]            0020
