  • question_answer
By weight, liquid A makes up 8 per cent of solution R and 18 per cent of solution S. If 3 grams of solution R are mixed with 7 grams of solution S, then liquid A accounts for what per cent of the weight of the resulting solution?

    A) 19%

    B) 10%

    C) 13%

    D) 15%

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

If 3 gm of solution R contains \[=\frac{8}{100}\times 3\] \[=(.08)\times 3\] \[=0.24\,\,gm\,\,of\,\,liquid\] and 7 gm of solution S contains \[=\frac{18}{100}\times 7\] \[=(.18)\,\,(7)\] \[=1.26\,\,gm\,\,of\,\,liquid\,\,A\] When the two solutions are mixed, the resulting solution weighs 10 gm of solution that contains \[=0.24+1.26\] \[=1.50\,\,gm\,\,of\,\,liquid\,\,A\] \[\Rightarrow \] liquid A makes up\[\frac{1.5}{10}\]or \[\frac{15}{100}\]or 15% of the weight of resulting solution.
