Answer:
There was an order from Berlin that French would not be taught in school anymore. Instead German would be taught by a new teacher. That was probably their last French lesson. It was a Sunday morning and there was no noise or activity. The French teacher, Mr. Hamel seemed to be calm and he was becoming emotional. He was wearing a special dress and all the villagers were sitting on the back benches of the classroom.
