(a)      What was the order from Berlin and what changes did it cause in the school?

Answer:

There was an order from Berlin that French would not be taught in school anymore. Instead German would be taught by a new teacher. That was probably their last French lesson. It was not a Sunday morning yet, there was no noise or activity in the school. I he French teacher Mr. Hamel seemed to be calm and he was becoming emotional. He was wearing a special dress and all the villagers were sitting on the back benches of the class. The whole atmosphere of the school was silent and peaceful.
