(f) On the first day in the land of apples, Zitkala noticed a very unusual thing. All the girls were lined up who were marching into the dining room. These were Indian girls, in stiff shoes and clinging dresses. When the first bell rang, all pupils pulled out their chairs from under the table. On the second bell everybody sat down and picked up their knife and fork and began eating. She called this 'eating by formula.'
