Answer:
(a) After the announcement that German was to be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine, the elderly people came to the school that day to attend the last French lesson. They, perhaps, wanted to thank M. Hamel for his valuable service, teaching, and it was also to pay homage to their country that was not theirs anymore.
