Gandhiji in 1919 decided to launch a nationwide Satyagraha against the proposed ?Rowlatt Act (1919)?. Despite opposition by Indian, the Act was passed and it gave enormous powers to the government to repress political activities.

(i) On 6th April 1919, Gandhiji launched a nationwide Satvagraha which received huge response. People came out in support from various cities.

(ii) Most of the leaders were picked up from Amritsar. Gandhiji was barred from entering Delhi.

(iii) The colonial Government allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years.
