Social stratification refers to the division of society into the groups of high and low, big and small. By this category, the people in society are ranked in a hierarchy.

Three key principles are:

(a) It is a society wide system that unequally distributes social resources among categories of people.

(b) It is closely linked to family and to the inheritance of social resources from one generation to the next.

(c) It is supposed by patterns of belief or ideology for e.g.: A woman from any class may face sexual violence or division of society on the basis of four Varnas.
