  • question_answer
The amount of electrolytes required to coagulate a given amount of \[AgI\]colloidal solution (-ve charge) will be in the order

    A)  \[NaN{{O}_{3}}>A{{l}_{2}}{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{3}}>Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]

    B)  \[A{{l}_{2}}{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{3}}>Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}>NaN{{O}_{3}}\]

    C)  \[A{{l}_{2}}{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{3}}>NaN{{O}_{3}}>Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[NaN{{O}_{3}}>Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}>A{{l}_{2}}{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{3}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Since, \[\text{AgI}\]is a negatively charged sol, so according to Hardy Schulze law, higher the positive charge on the metal atoms, more is the tendency of metal atom to cause coagulation of negatively charged colloid. The order of positive charge is \[N{{a}^{+}}<B{{a}^{2+}}<A{{l}^{3+}}\] Thus, the order of amount of electrolytes required is in the order \[NaN{{O}_{3}}>Ba{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{2}}>A{{l}_{2}}{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{3}}\] Note In paper, the formula of aluminium nitrate is incorrect. Correct formula of aluminium nitrate is \[A{{l}_{2}}{{(N{{O}_{3}})}_{3}}.\]
