  • question_answer 1)
When sodium is dissolved in liquid ammonia, a solution of deep blue colour is obtained. The colour of the solution is  due to : (a) ammoniated electron                                             (b) sodium ion    (c) sodium amide                                                             (d) ammoniated sodium ion

    Answer:

      (a) \[M+(x+y)N{{H}_{3}}\to {{M}^{+}}{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{x}}+{{e}^{-}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  Ammoniated \\  electron \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{y}}}}\,\] When ordinary light falls on solution the ammoniated electrons are excited by absorbing red light and the light transmitted is blue. This imparts blue colour to the solution.
