Chromium is a typical hard metal while mercury is a liquid. Explain.

    Answer:

In chromium, the inter atomic bonding in the atoms is very strong because they have five unpaired electrons \[(3{{d}^{5}}4{{s}^{1}})\] in the d-subshell. Therefore, chromium is a very hard metal. On the contrary, in mercury, the atoms have fully filled d-orbitals \[(5{{d}^{10}}6{{s}^{2}})\] and the bonding in them is quite weak. Therefore, mercury is a liquid at room temperature.
