Discuss briefly the trends properties of the group-16 elements (oxygen family). Define catenation and illustrate it with an example.

    Answer:

                              (a) Properties of halogen (group-17)   (i) Reactivity of halogen decreases down the group.           (ii) The higher oxides of halogen tend to be more stable than the lower oxides.                                      (iii) Fluorine shows valency one only. Other elements show valency 1, 3, 5, 7. (iv) Melting points and boiling points of group -17 elements increase down the group. (v) Fluorine forms only two oxide  while other elements form many oxides. (vi) Halogens react with metals to form ionic halide (vii) Halogens combine among each other to give inter halogen compounds. e.g. A = larger halogen X = smaller halogen (b)
