Iodine is liberated in the reaction between \[KI\] and \[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ions but chlorine is not liberated when \[KCl\]is added to\[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ions. Explain.

    Answer:

KI dissolves in water to give \[{{I}^{-}}\] ions which are powerful reducing in nature. They reduce \[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ions to \[C{{u}^{+}}\] ions and \[{{I}_{2}}\]is thus liberated. \[2C{{u}^{2+}}+2{{I}^{-}}\,\xrightarrow{\,}\,2C{{u}^{+}}\,+{{I}_{2}}\] But \[C{{l}^{-}}\] ions released when \[HCl\] is dissolved in water are very weak reducing in nature and are not in a position to reduce \[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ions to \[C{{u}^{+}}\] ions. Therefore, chlorine is not liberated in this case.
