The mass of a body measured by a physical balance in a lift at rest is found to be m. If the lift is going up with an acceleration a, its mass will be measured as

    A)  \[m\left( 1-\frac{a}{g} \right)\]

    B)         \[\left( 1+\frac{a}{g} \right)\]

    C)  \[m\]

    D)         Zero

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

A physical balance compares the mass on the two pans like two masses connected by string passing over the pulley. While a spring balance gives reading due to the net force with which the mass suspended from its hooks is pulled downwards. Thus the reading of the spring balance is affected depending upon the acceleration of the lift. But in case of physical balance, both the pans are equally affected by the movement of the lift. So readings of a physical balance are unaffected in a lift.
