    In Pheretima, in each of the segments 26 and those behind it, there are two small, whitish lymph glands, located one on each side of the dorsal blood vessel. Function of these glands is unknown, but presumably, these produce phagocytic cells, which are occasionally liberated into the coelomic fluid to phagocytise and destroy harmful   bacteria and other invaders.
