RAJASTHAN PMT Rajasthan - PMT Solved Paper-2007

  • question_answer
An electron and a proton are possessing same amount of kinetic energies. The de-Broglie wavelength is greater for

    A)  electron

    B)  proton

    C)  both (a) and (b)

    D)         none of these

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

According to de-Broglie hypothesis, wavelength,       \[\lambda =\frac{h}{p}\] where \[h\] is Plancks constant. Also,      \[p=mv\] \[\therefore \]  \[\lambda =\frac{h}{mv}\]   \[\Rightarrow \]    \[\lambda \propto \frac{1}{n}\] Mass of electron is \[9.1\times {{10}^{-31}}\,\,kg\] and of proton is \[1.6\times {{10}^{-27}}\,\,kg\], hence mass of electron is less than that of proton, so electron will have greater wavelength.
