    \[C{{H}_{3}}\overset{\begin{smallmatrix} C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}} \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,=\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  C{{H}_{3}} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}}}\,\xrightarrow[{{H}_{2}}]{catalyst}X,\] Number of optical isomer possible will be:

    A)  2

    B)  4

    C)  0

    D)  3

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

When A react with hydrogen in presence of a catalyst then following reaction is observed, \[C{{H}_{3}}\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}} \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  C{{H}_{3}} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{CH}}\,+{{H}_{2}}\xrightarrow[{}]{catalyst}\] \[C{{H}_{3}}-\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  H \end{smallmatrix}}{\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{3}} \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}}\,-C{{H}_{2}}-C{{H}_{3}}\] There is no asymmetric carbon atom in this compound so, it can not show the optical activity and hence, number of optical isomers is zero.
