Maleic acid and fumaric acid are

    A)  position isomers

    B)  geometric isomers

    C)  enantiomers

    D)  functional isomers

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The structures of maleic and fumaric acids ale given below \[\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  (maleic\,\,acid \\  molecular  \\  formula\,\,({{C}_{4}}{{H}_{4}}{{O}_{4}}) \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{H-C-COOH}{\overset{H-C-COOH}{\mathop{||}}}\,}}\,\] \[\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  (fumaric\,acid \\  molecular\,formula\,({{C}_{4}}{{H}_{4}}{{O}_{4}}) \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{HOOC-C-H}{\overset{H-C-COOH}{\mathop{||}}}\,}}\,\] The structures of famaric and maleic acid suggest that they are geometrical isomers because they have same molecular formula but different spatial arrangement of atoms around a double bond. When the similar groups are present on same side of double bond, the isomer is called cis and when different groups are present on same side of double bond, then the isomer is called tram. Hence, maleic acid is cis form and fumaric acid is trans form.
