Fractional crystallisation is
used for the separation of mixture of two compounds which are soluble in the same
solvent but their solubilities are different. It involves the preparation of
saturated solution of the mixture in a suitable solvent at higher temperature.
The clear solution is now cooled, the less soluble component will crystallise
first and can be separated. The remaining component in the solution can also be
crystallised on evaporation end cooling of the remaining solution.
