A transverse harmonic wave on a string is described by y (x, t) = 3.0 sin (36t + 0.018 x + /4), where x, y are m cm and t in sec. The positive direction of x-axis is from left to right. (i) Is this a travelling or a stationary wave ? If it is travelling, what are the speed and direction of its propagation ? (ii) what are its amplitude and frequency ? (iii) what is the initial phase at the origin ? (iv) What is the least distance between two successive crests in the wave ?

    Answer:

Compare the given equation with that of a plane progressive wave of amplitude r, travelling with a velocity                 from right of left :                           ??..(i) We find that ((') The given equation represents a transverse harmonic wave travelling from right to left. It is not a stationary wave. (ii) The given eqn. can be rewritten as ?.(ii) Equating coeffs of t in the two eqns. (i) and (ii), we get,                                             Obviously,           Also,                                                                      Frequency,         (iii) Initial phase,  (iv) Least distance between two successive crests of the wave = wavelength,
