12th Class English My Mother at Sixty - Six - Kamala Das

  • question_answer 3)
Why has the poet brought in the image of the merry children ‘spilling out of their domes'?

    Answer:

The poetess gazes at the trees that seem to be running away, because of the speed of the vehicle. (She then sees the children rushing out of their homes. The children are young and a contrast to her aged mother. They represent joyousness and vitality, a contrast to the ashen visage of the poetess' aging mother, which brings home to her the painful realization that she may soon lose her mother. They lend a contrast to her mood.
