Sylvia
Plath in her 18 line poem has personified the mirror, which in a monologue
portrays the harsh but true reality of human life.
Nobody wants to look old and haggard and we do not want to accept the
truth that ageing and death are inevitable. Through the means of a woman who is
agitated over her reflection in the mirror, the mirror reveals that it portrays
things as they are i.e., in an accurate and objective manner. The mirror is
truthful, exact, unbiased and unprejudiced. It is neither cruel, nor indifferent.
It is only truthful. It is free from emotions like . love and hatred.
Reflecting what is present in front of it, the mirror does not reproduce
anything that appeared before it in the past. It is also called as 'the eye of
a little God' as it is impartial and only sees the truth. Like God, it gives a
true reflection of the objects that appear before it.
