Scientists have studied the way crops grow near hedges that surround fields. The diagram shows their results. (a) Suggest why crops close to the hedge do not grow as well as crops in the middle of the field. (b) Why do crops around 10-15 metres from the hedge grow better than crops in the middle of the field?

    Answer:

                        (a) The roots of the hedge remove water and mineral salts from the soil. This makes it more difficult for the crops to grow. The hedge also throws shade over the nearby crops, making them photosynthesis less as the light intensity is less, which means they have less energy for growth.                                        () (b) Further away from the hedge, the crops have enough nutrients from the soil and sunlight for photosynthesis. The hedge also provides protection from the winds, making it warmer than the exposed areas in the middle of the field. Warmer temperatures mean more photosynthesis and faster growth.           ()
