three-carbon molecule pyruvate. This pyruvate further breaks down to generate
energy. This is the first step of respiration.
Respiration involves the production of bioenergy in the form of ATP in
living organisms. In respiration, high energy molecule breaks down into simple
low energy food molecule (carbon dioxide + water) and release

The breakdown of pyruvate may take two pathways
(i) Anaerobic respiration In this process, breakdown of
pyruvate occurs in absence of oxygen. It occurs in yeast.
This pathway is also followed by muscle cells, when there
is lack of oxygen during vigorous physical work.
(ii) Aerobic respiration In this process, breakdown of pyruvate
occurs in presence of oxygen and oxygen is utilised in the process.
