  • question_answer   Differentiate   between   metal   and non-metal on the basis of their chemical properties.

    Answer:

Sol.         The differences between metal and non-metal on the basis of their chemical properties are

    S. No Metal Non-metal
    (i) Metals react with oxygen to form basic oxides. Non-metals react with oxygen to form acidic oxides.
(ii) Metals displace hydrogen from water (or steam). Non-metals do not displace  from water (or steam).
(iii) Metals displace  from dilute acids. Non-metals do not displace from dilute acids.
(iv) Metals are good reducing agents. Non-metals are good oxidising agents.
    (V) Metals are electropositive in nature. Non-metals are electronegative in nature.
(VI) Metals react with S, , etc to form ionic sulphides and chlorides respectively. Non-metals react with sulphur, chlorine, etc to form covalent sulphides and chlorides respectively.
