The
Consumers Protection Act (COPRA), 1986 is really a landmark in the growth of
consumer's protection. That is why, India has been celebrating 24th December as
the National Consumers' Day. It is on this day that Indian Parliament enacted
the Consumer Protection Act in 1986.
The Act has enabled us as consumers to have the right to represent
ourselves in the consumer courts. The enactment of COPRA has led to the setting
up of separate departments of consumer affairs in Central and State
Governments.
India is one of the countries that have exclusive courts for
consumer reprisal. There are today more than 700 consumer groups in the country
of which about 20-25 are well organised and recognised for their work.
