Answer:
(i)
In India, the proportion of women in the legislature has been very low. India
is among the bottom group of nations in the world in women's representation in
politics. India is behind the averages of several developing countries of
Africa and Latin America.
(ii) One way to solve this problem, is to
make it legally binding to have a fair proportion of women in the elected
bodies. That is what Panchayati Raj has done in India. One-third of the seats
in local governments are now reserved for women.
(iii) Women's organizations and activists
have been demanding a similar reservations of at least one-third of the seats
in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women. A bill with this proposal has
been pending before the Parliament for more than a decade. This bill has not
yet been passed.
(iv) Gender division is an example that some
form of social division needs to be expressed in politics. So representation of
women in politics is required to settle their problems in our society.
