Gandhi designed the Swaraj Flag in 1921. It was a tricolour (red, green,
white) flag and had a spinning wheel in the centre. It represented the Gandhian
ideal of self help. The three colours of the flag stated that red stood for the
sacrifice of the people, white for purity and green for hope.
Carrying the flag, holding it aloft, during marches became a symbol of defiance.
This flag gave the nationalist a strong patriotic feeling. The Swaraj flag became
the Official Flag of Congress in 1931 became the symbol of the Independence
Movement.
