Using pesticides is the most common method used by farmers to eradicate
pathogens like bacteria, fungi and viruses that causes disease in crops.
Pesticides includes herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. These
chemicals are sprayed on crop plants or used for treating seeds and soil.
However, excessive use of pesticides may be harmful.(1)
Harmful effects are
(a) Pesticides should be used in appropriate quantities
large amount can be very problematic.
(b) Pesticides are chemicals that cannot be decomposed by
microbes or humans.
So, when the crops sprayed by pesticides are consumed by
us, it get stored in our system and creates problem for us.
(c) Pesticides are also poisonous for some plants. This
effect the plant growth and plant yield.
(d) Pesticides may also cause environmental pollution.

(ii) Alternate Method-Organic Farming
Farmers should be encouraged to do organic farming, which
is farming systems involving minimal use of chemicals as fertilisers, herbicides,
pesticides, etc., and with maximum input of organic manures, recycled farm
wastes (straw and livestock excreta). (1)
Other Features of Organic Farming
Bio-agents such as culture of blue-green algae is used in preparation
of biofertilisers. Bio-pesticides are made using neem leaves or turmeric
specially in grain storage.
A healthy cropping system is adopted like intercropping,
mixed cropping and crop rotation to ensure good yield.
