Mixture
of naphthalene and sodium chloride is separated by the process of sublimation
as naphthalene is a sublimate but sodium chloride does not. For separating the
mixture, take it in a china dish over which an inverted funnel is placed and
stem of the funnel is closed with cotton. (2)
Set the apparatus as shown in the figure below.
Now heat the mixture, naphthalene being a sublimate
sublimes and when its vapours reach at the funnel they get condensed there to
give solid naphthalene. Sodium chloride remain as residue in the china dish. (1)
