                                  Ajay and Vijay are two farmers. Ajay cultivate maize and soyabean in his field every year and gets good yield. Vijay cultivates only maize in his field every year. After few years Vijay noticed that his yield is continuously declining. Then Ajay advised him to grow soyabean with maize in his field. Answer:

   (a) Growing of same crop in a field for long time makes the soil deficient to certain nutrients, mainly nitrogen. Hence, Ajay adviced Vijay to grow soyabean with maize because soyabean plant helps in fixing atmospheric nitrogen and enrich the soil with nitrogen.                     (b) Plants are unable to utilise atmospheric nitrogen directly. Nitrogen fixing bacteria helps in fixing atmospheric nitrogen in the form of nitrate, which would be easily utilised by plants.     (c) The passage shows that Ajay is a knowledgeable farmer and is aware regarding soil fertility.
