      Why is mitochondria called power house of cell? Give three similarties and one difference between mitochondria and plastid.

    Answer:

                      Mitochondria are called power house of the cell because these are associated with cellular respiration and energy generation of the cell.             The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by the mitochondria in the form of ATP molecules.  For this reason, mitochondria are known as the power house of the cell.                       (1) Three similarities between mitochondria and plastids are (i) Both have their own DNA and ribosomes. (ii) External structure of mitochondria and plastids are same. (iii) Both have more than one membrane layer. One differences between mitochondria and plastids is that mitochondria are present in both plant and animal cell, whereas plastids are present only in plant cell.                      (3)
