      What are the main functions of each of the cell components?

    Answer:

                      (i) Plasma membrane It acts as a semi permeable membrane and allows only selective substances to pass through it. (ii) Chromosomes To carry hereditary characters from one generation to another. (iii) Lysosomes The breakdown of unwanted macromolecules is the main function of these organelles. (iv) Ribosomes It helps in protein synthesis. (v) Nucleus Control centre of the cell. Contains the cells DNA (genetic information) in the form of genes. (vi) Mitochondria The   main   function   of mitochondria in aerobic cells is the production of energy by synthesis of ATP. (vii) Nucleolus Biosynthesis of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and acts as a platform for protein synthesis. (viii) Cell wall It provides protection and rigidity to the plant cell. (ix) Chloroplast These   are   the   sites   of photosynthesis within plant cells. (x) Peroxisomes Similar to (but smaller than) lysosomes, the metabolic function of peroxisomes include (a)Breakdown of toxic compounds, e.g., in the cells of the liver and kidney.
