Name one of the most important of the politically active women in revolutionary France. What do you know about her?

    Answer:

Olympe de Gouges was a playwright and political activist whose feminist writings reached a large audience. As political tension rose in France, she became politically involved. She was outspoken advocate for improving the conditions of slaves. She wrote a 'Declaration of the Rights of Woman and Citizen' and demanded that French women be given the same rights as French men. In 1793, she criticised the Jacobin government for forcibly closing down women's clubs. She was executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror for attacking Robespierre. Today, she is best known as an early feminist who challenged the practice of male authority and the notion of male-female inequality.
