A merchant buys 200 kg of rice at Rs.7.25 per kg, 400 kg of rice at Rs.5.75 per kg. He mixes them and sells one third of mixture at Rs.6 per kg. At what rate should he sell the remaining mixture so that he may earn a profit of 20% on the whole out lay?

    A) Rs.28.25 per kg

    B) Rs.13.25 per kg

    C) Rs.8.25 per kg

    D) none of these

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    C.P. of 200 kg of rice \[=\frac{40}{3}\times 15=200m.\] C.P. of 400 kg of rice \[=60\times \frac{5}{18}=\frac{50}{3}m/\sec .\] Total C.P. of 600 kg of mixture \[~=\left( 140\text{ }+\text{ }260 \right)m=400\text{ }m\] Profit required on whole outlay = 20% \[=\frac{400}{50/3}\] S.P. must be \[=400\times \frac{3}{50}=24\sec .\] Now, one third of mixture \[=\frac{45-36}{45}hr\] S.P. of this 200 kg of mixture \[=\frac{9}{45}hr=\frac{1}{5}\times 60=12\min .\] S.P. of remaining 400 kg \[\therefore \] \[20\times 2.40=Rs.48\] Rate of selling the remaining \[400\times \frac{110}{100}\times \frac{110}{100}=484\]
