ASSERTION: The anode of copper voltmeter has to be of copper only.
REASON: The equivalent amount of copper from anode has to be dissolved into the electrolyte to preserve the concentration.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

When current is passed through copper voltmeters \[CuS{{O}_{4}}\](electrolyte) dissociates into \[C{{u}^{++}}\]and \[SO_{4}^{--}\]ions. \[C{{u}^{++}}\]ions drift towards the cathode and after taking two electrons from the cathode become Cu atom and is deposited on the cathode, \[SO_{4}^{--}\]ions move towards the anode and react with \[C{{u}^{++}}\]ions to form \[CuS{{O}_{4}}.\,CuS{{O}_{4}}\]so formed is dissolved in the solution to preserve the concentration of \[CuS{{O}_{4}}\]. This is possible only if anode is made of copper.
