ASSERTION: Electric potential is scalar and electric intensity is vector quantity.
REASON: The value of electric potential and electric intensity at the middle point of the line joining an electron and a proton is zero.

    A) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.

    B) If both assertion and reason are true and reason is not the correct explanation of assertion.

    C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D) If both assertion and reason are false.

    E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Electric potential V is a scalar quantity, therefore electric potential at middle point will be the algebraic sum of potentials due to electron and proton i.e. \[V=\frac{k\,\sum{q}}{r}=0\] as \[\sum{q}=-q+q=0\] But if a unit positive charge held at the center will be repelled by proton and attracted by electron with the same force, the net force on unit positive charge will not be zero. Therefore electric field intensity E, cannot be zero at the middle point.
