Directions: In the following questions, a statement of Assertion [A] is followed by a statement of Reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
Assertion [A]: A spark occur between the poles of a switch when the switch is opened.
Reason (R): Current flowing in the conductor produces magnetic field.

    A) Both Assertion [A] and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion [A]

    B) Both Assertion [A] and Reason (R) are true but Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of Assertion [A]

    C) Assertion [A] is true but Reason (R) is false

    D) Assertion [A] is false and Reason (R) is also false

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    (b) According to Lenz's law, induced emf are in a direction such as to attempt to maintain the original magnetic flux when a change occurs. When the switch is opened, the sudden drop in the magnetic field in the circuit induces an emf in a direction that attempts to keep the original current flowing. This can cause a spark as the current bridges the air gap between the poles of the switch. (The spark is more likely in circuits with large inductance).
