Direction: For question numbers two statements are given-one labeled Assertion (A) and the other labelled Reason (R). Select the correct answer to these questions from the codes [a], [b], [c] and [d] as given below.
Assertion Cells having cell wall withstand very dilute (hypotonic) external media without bursting.
Reason The cell wall exerts an equal pressure against the swollen cell.

    A) Both A and R are true and R is correct explanation of the A

    B) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of the A

    C) A is true, but R is false

    D) A is false, but R is true

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.
In hypotonic medium, cells takes up water from the external medium by the osmosis.
Due to high amount of water inside, the cells swell up and build up pressure against the cell wall.
At this point, the cell exerts an equal pressure against the swollen cell. Thus, because of the presence of cell wall, cells can withstand very dilute external media without bursting.
