    One of the important human filaria is the African eye-worm Loa loa, transmitted by mangofly chiefly found in Africa. They commonly invade subcutaneous tissue and during their migration may pass across the eye-ball, hence the name eyeworm. Loa microfilariae cause very injurious and fatal cause when they penetrate brain and spinal cord and perhaps carry neurotropic viruses. During their migration, they care itense itching and swelling. They are also cause swelling and pain in eyes, known as ?calabar swellings?.
