JEE Main & Advanced Physics Simple Harmonic Motion Question Bank Assertion and Reason

  • question_answer
Assertion             :       In extreme position of a particle executing S.H.M., both velocity and acceleration are zero.  Reason                 :       In S.H.M., acceleration always acts towards mean position.

    A)             If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

    B)             If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C)             If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D)             If the assertion and reason both are false.

    E)             If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

In simple harmonic motion the velocity is given by,                    \[v=\omega \sqrt{{{a}^{2}}-{{y}^{2}}}\] at extreme position, y = a.                 \ \[v=0.\] But acceleration \[A=-\,{{\omega }^{2}}a,\] which is maximum at extreme position.
