JEE Main & Advanced Physics Two Dimensional Motion Question Bank Assertion and Reason

  • question_answer
Assertion          :           Two similar trains are moving along the equatorial line with the same speed but in opposite direction. They will exert equal pressure on the rails. Reason            :           In uniform circular motion the magnitude of acceleration remains constant but the direction continuously changes.

    A)             If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

    B)             If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C)             If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D)             If the assertion and reason both are false.

    E)             If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

Due to earth?s axial rotation, the speed of the trains relative to earth will be different and hence the centripetal forces on them will be different. Thus their effective weights \[mg-\frac{m{{v}^{2}}}{r}\]and \[mg+\frac{m{{v}^{2}}}{r}\] will be different. So they exert different pressure on the rails.
