Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. It is rapidly converted in the body to salicylic acid, which is responsible for most of the pharmacological actions. Various uses of Aspirin are - as analgesic; as antipyretic; relieves acute Rheumatic fever, produces relief in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. As aspirin inhibits platelet aggregation, it may lower the incidence of reinfection. Excessive use of aspirin is known to cause acute salicylate poisoning (vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, restlessness, hallucinations, convulsions, etc.), reduction in blood - clotting property and gastrointestinal bleeding (the most important adverse effect of aspirin is gastric mucosal damage and peptic ulceration).
