JEE Main & Advanced Physics Thermodynamical Processes Question Bank Assertion and Reason

  • question_answer
Assertion             :       In isothermal process whole of the heat energy supplied to the body is converted into internal energy. Reason                 :       According to the first law of thermodynamics             \[\Delta Q=\Delta U+p\Delta V\].             [AIIMS 1997]

    A)             If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

    B)             If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C)             If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D)             If the assertion and reason both are false.

    E)             If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

As there is no change in internal energy of the system during an isothermal change. Hence, the energy taken by the gas is utilised by doing work against external pressure. According to FLOT \[\Delta Q=\Delta U+P\Delta V\] Hence \[\Delta Q=\Delta U=P\Delta V\]                                 Therefore, reason is true and assertion is false.
