A capillary tube of radius R is immersed in water and water rises in it to a height H. Mass of water in the capillary tube is M. If the radius of the tube is doubled, mass of water that will rise in the capillary tube will now be  [RPMT 1997; RPET 1999; CPMT 2002]

    A) M

    B)              2M

    C)             M/2

    D)              4M

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

                    Mass of liquid in capillary tube             \[M=\pi {{R}^{2}}H\times \rho \]\ \[M\propto {{R}^{2}}\times \left( \frac{1}{R} \right)\] (As H µ 1/R) \ \[\Mu \propto R\]. If radius becomes double then mass will becomes twice.
