Software Types

Software refers to the set of computer programs, procedures and associated documents that describe the programs and how they are to be used. System software is the set of one or more programs designed to control the operation and extend the processing capability of a computer system. Operating System, Compiler, Interpreter, Assembler are examples of system software. Application software is a set of one or more programs designed to solve a specific problem or do a specific task. Software like financial accounting, payroll, examinations, human resources management etc. are example of application software.
