Observe the diagram given below of Hershey and Chase experiment and answer the following questions.
    (i) In Hershey and Chase experiment, bacteriophage nucleic acids were labelled as

    A) \[^{32}P\] labelled phosphate

    B) \[^{3}H\] labelled \[{{H}_{2}}O\]

    C) \[^{35}S\]labelled sulphate

    D) \[^{14}C\] labelled \[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

[a] AD Hershey and Martha Chase (1952) grew cultures of Escherichia coli One culture was treated with radioactive sulphur, 35S which had bacteriophage protein coat. The other culture was treated with radioactive phosphorus \[^{32}P\]. Radioactive sulphur got incorporated into sulphur containing ammo acids (cysteme and methionine) and therefore became part of bacterial protein. Radioactive phosphorus got "aerated into nucleotides, which formed the nucleic acids, mostly DNA So bacteriophage nucleic acid were labelled as \[^{32}P\] phosphates.
